A Passion for the Game
Hi, I’m Coach Etai, a passionate Grade 12 student with a deep love for basketball that has shaped my life in remarkable ways. Growing up in North Toronto, I’ve always been drawn to the game. From the moment I picked up a basketball as a child, I found joy in shooting hoops and the camaraderie that comes with playing alongside friends.
A Pivotal Challenge
My journey took a significant turn at the age of 14 during a pivotal game. While driving toward the basket for a layup, I was fouled hard and ended up breaking my right hand in two places. The doctors informed me that I would need surgery and cautioned that I might never play basketball again. Hearing that was devastating, as basketball had always been my passion.
Finding Strength in Adversity
Determined to overcome this challenge, I underwent surgery and began the long process of recovery. Instead of giving in to frustration, I saw this as an opportunity for growth. With my right hand immobilized, I dedicated myself to practicing with my left hand, spending countless hours on the neighborhood court. It was during this time that I discovered the true value of our local basketball community. I learned how the court could serve as a safe haven—a place to connect with friends, improve skills, and share my love for the game.
Addressing Bullying on the Court
During my time on the neighborhood court, I also noticed some bullying and how certain kids were often left out of the games. This observation deeply affected me. I realized that, alongside the joy of basketball, there was a need for a more inclusive and supportive environment. I wanted to create a safe space for all kids, where everyone feels welcome and valued.
A Newfound Appreciation
Once I healed, I returned to basketball with a newfound appreciation and determination. I honed my skills in the North Toronto Rep Program, where I learned the importance of teamwork and dedication. I went on to compete in the Elite League and now proudly represent Maccabi Toronto, further solidifying my commitment to the sport.
Giving Back to the Community
Inspired by my experiences and the desire to give back, I’m excited to launch a weekly neighborhood basketball program for younger kids. My goal is to create a safe, inclusive environment where kids can come together to play, learn, and grow through basketball. I understand firsthand the impact that a supportive community can have on young athletes, and I want to foster that same sense of belonging and encouragement in my program.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Through this initiative, I hope to inspire the next generation of basketball players, instilling in them the values of resilience, teamwork, and the sheer joy of playing the game. I’m committed to ensuring that every child feels welcomed, valued, and empowered to pursue their love for basketball, just as I did. My goal is to ensure that no child is left out, fostering an atmosphere where friendships can flourish and every player has the opportunity to shine.
